Community Based Coalition Lead for Suicide Prevention

Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Health, has a Community Based Coalition Lead for Suicide Prevention.

The focus of this role is to establish and coordinate a multi-sector coalition in Houston, Fillmore, Winona, Wabasha, and Goodhue Counties. The purpose of the coalitions is to review data on prevalence of suicide and develop plans and strategies to decrease substance misuse and suicidal experiences for youth, ages 10-24.  The goals of the Community Based Coalition lead is to: 

  • Increase individuals, organizations, and communities’ capacity to develop and implement a comprehensive public health approach by:  
  • Building capacity to develop a multi-sector coalition, to increase collaboration with partners working on shared risk and protective factors.  
  • Developing a data driven plan to address substance misuse and suicidal experiences.  
  • Choose universal, selected, and indicated prevention strategies across the social ecological model to respond to the needs and culture of the community. Strategies will include changes to policies, practices, and programs across the defined community to prevent substance misuse and suicidal experiences.  
  • Expand individuals, organizations and communities understanding of their role in the planning and implementation of strategies to promote wellness and prevent substance misuse and suicidal experiences.

SE Minnesota Suicide Prevention Coordinator:
Supporting Safety-Creating Hope

The Canvas Health Suicide Prevention Program services include research and evidence based culturally responsive presentations as well as Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) suicide prevention trainings. Additionally, the program offers collaboration activities with community-based suicide prevention efforts through our Regional Coordinators and Tribal Liaison.

Our school presentations are available for students in grades 7-12, and QPR trainings for those 18 and over. Our aim is to support empowering everyone in the communities we serve to help prevent suicide.

Presentations are free of charge and funded by the Minnesota Department of Health. If you are in crisis, dial or text 988 to be connected to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
